Confession time….the title of this blog is a little misleading.

I don’t make a habit of hurling myself off of waterfalls, but I have been known to paddle class V from time to time.  Sometimes I even enjoy it.  But while I am happy to paddle water that challenges my sanity, I am equally as content to paddle class I-II.

Mom floats the GW Canal

That’s ok.  I didn’t want to hear their bitchin’ anyway.  For me, a good class II paddle is all about who you are with.  My mom won’t go near anything resembling white water (except that time we tricked her into putting on at Lee’s Ferry….story for another day).  But on the friendly “waves of the GW canal run at Violette’s Lock on the Potomac, she’ll happily paddle her rec kayak and soak up the sun.

Our last trip down this pleasant section turned into a floating html meeting, my father instructing and I trying to process (I hope that you appreciate the spaces between paragraphs).  I caught up on the details of my friend Brian’s life, including healing body parts, his kick ass lacrosse playing woman, and job talk.  I also advised him on how he might work part time as a guitar instructor.

No pesky waves are ruining THIS conversation!

On this very scenic paddle, we even got to hike a charming little trail (thanks giant channel-spanning tree!).

There is magic in paddling flat water with loved ones.  It’s the river equivalent of driving through Kansas with your best friends.  Ok, to be fair, Kansas is not anywhere as interesting as a river, but you get the analogy.  The focus would certainly not be on the features of the endless flatness of I-70.  What I am hitting at is that with the “OH MY GOD! factor removed, a river trip becomes more about who you are with.  It’s a floating tea party, a moving happy hour, or a watery conference.

Sooooooooo….if you can’t stand to paddle without any play or without spine crunching drops, maybe you’re not a very interesting person, and therefore no one interesting wants to paddle with you.

Ouch!  Sorry if that stung.  In Word press’s version of “Blogging for Dummies it suggested being “edgy.  Anyway, I just can’t understand boaters who can ignore their beautiful surroundings, or avoid good conversation because they are too busy crying over the lack of play spots.

If any of you extreme boaters are left, you probably realize by now that you have also experienced what I am talking about. Even in a more adventurous run, there are still the pools or so called “doldrums.  Most paddlers don’t stop to ask how their buddy’s spoon collection is coming along in the middle of a class V drop.  Conversation about weird hobbies are almost exclusively reserved for the flats.

I like to maximize my conversation by taking time to paddle rivers of little consequence.  Heck, I have friends who I’ve never even seen without paddling gear on.  They are simply too stinky to take home.  If I don’t get to talk to them on the river I never will.  I used to wonder why we don’t socialize much off the river, but decided that the answer is easy.  Why hang out at a bar with friends who will hang out on the water?  What better backdrop to conversation than the quiet flow of the water?  Besides, you should see the sweaters Joe wears to the bar….(picture a caucasian Bill Cosby)

I promised some boaters I would add a section about how you can use flat water to hone your skills…ok….everyone agree that you can do that?  Get your flabby butt onto the river and practice some strokes, eddies, rolls, and flat water donkey flips!

To wrap things up, I will tell you a quick story about my dog Max, who just wants to come along wherever I go.  Outfitted with his super cozy Ruffwear PFD, he is happy to canoe with me in moderate whitewater.  However the drops still make him a little nervous.  But take him on a nice float, and he’ll go so far as to jump in the water to go say hello to college chicks in tubes.  That, my friends, is the ultimate measure of comfort.
