Should you be buying drugstore makeup?  Or should you be checking out the departments store and makeup store brands?  The answer is…it depends!  Here’s why.

Drugstore Brand Makeup – Pros

One thing you have to say for drugstore makeup — Maybelline, Cover Girl, Revlon and such — it is readily available and at a pretty good price.  With the exception of maybe color choice (if the one you use happens to be sold out), you can find these makeups practically wherever you travel.

I’m willing to bet that at least 90% of girls/women bought their first makeup at the drugstore; it’s almost a rite of passage!

So to recap; the pros for this kind of makeup is that it’s:

• Easy to find – available almost anywhere
• Priced right for a budget

So what are the cons for buying makeup from a drugstore or grocery store?

Cons for Drugstore Makeup

If there are pros, there have to be cons.  One of the cons is not being able to test the makup colors.

This may not be such a big deal for lipstick, but buying foundation is another.  If you buy one too light, you look pasty.  Too dark and your face doesn’t match the rest of your body.

In general, when you buy from either a department store or makeup store, they’ll let you test out colors to get your perfect match. 

The other thing you need to look at in drug/grocery store brands is the name.  If the name is Revelon, Maybelline, Cover Girl or one of the other “big names” then there is quality control.  But when it comes to unfamiliar names, you might want to pass them by (especially if they are very inexpensive.

New in the Drugstores – Mineral Makeup

After Bare Escentuals became the name in minerals cosmetics, it was only a matter of time before the big makeup names began to produce their own versions. Just one thing to note; check the ingredients carefully.  Not all “mineral makeup” is make up only of minerals!

Makeup Over 40

If you’re a lady of a certain age (or past a certain age) then most likely you’ll need to move beyond the drugstore makeup offerings.  Makeup over 40 is a whole different ballgame, with different needs.  For example, foundation over 40 is especially problematic when purchased in a drugstore.
